Interior California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum polifolium)

California interior buckwheat is as Eriogonum fasciculatum but grayer and tougher, hardy to -20 F . The two varieties of California buckwheat (polifolium and foliolosum) overlap in many areas, most notably around Lebec, Palmdale, and Lancaster. The buckwheats are very important butterfly plants and one of the pillars of their plant communities. The flowers, leaves and seeds are all used by all the smaller animals. Grows with Ephedra californica, Encelia actoni, Isomeris arborea, Yucca whipplei, Opuntia treleasei and Brickellia nevinii. Also called Eriogonum fasciculatum var. polifolium.
