Pioneertown is not your average ghost town, in fact it isn’t really a ghost town at all. Pioneertown was built in 1946 as a set for movie production. According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) a total of 36 films/television programs have been filmed in Pioneertown.
To get to Pioneertown take Interstate 10 to Highway 62 (29 Palms Highway – Joshua Tree National Park). Go about 25 miles NE on Highway 62 to Yucca Valley. Once in Yucca Valley turn on to Pioneertown Town Road. Drive roughly 5 miles down Pioneertown Town Road, and you will arrive.
Pioneertown is open to the public, on the weekends they perform gun fights and various stores are open throughout town. Don’t be surprised when walking through town if someone shouts a “hello” from one of the buildings on Mane St. as a number of the buildings are now residences. A hotel is located in town, as well as camping areas and corrals for those that wish to spend some extra time in the area.
I made my visit during the week during the early AM hours so nothing was going on in town. This was nice for a quick walk through and being able to look things over on my own. However I will make a point in getting back to Pioneertown on a weekend sometime in the future so that I can see the town in action.
